Can a tablet be run from USB power WITHOUT the battery in place?
« on: February 10, 2015, 09:44:13 PM »
I have an HP Slate 7 (actually, it's a "Slate 7 HD 3400US",
but I'll assume this will apply to almost any HP tablet).

I'm aware that the rechargeable battery has a finite lifetime.
That means that after a while, not only will the battery retain
less and less of a charge (meaning that you get fewer hours of use
after each subsequent recharge), but that there will come a time
when it won't hold a charge at all. And there's a possibility
that at that point, the tablet might refuse to work at all,
even with the charger plugged in.
By the time that happens, a replacement battery may be unavailable
because the manufacturer may have discontinued making them.

Therefore, I'm trying to conserve the longevity of the battery
by finding a way to disconnect it when using the tablet at home
or places where an AC outlet is available.

When I opened the back of the tablet, I discovered that the battery
connector is not a simple 2-wire (+/-) connection.
Instead, it's actually a small ribbon-cable consisting of seven wires!
The wire colors are ... Black, Black, Blue, Yellow, Green, Red, Red.

I haven't tried it yet, but I'm willing to bet that if I were to
disconnect the battery ribbon-cable and then either plug the charger
into the micro-USB port or apply an external power source
(probably 3.8 volts) to the Red and Black contacts of the ribbon-cable
socket, it would probably *NOT* work.
Chances are that the circuitry of the tablet is looking for something
on the contacts corresponding to the Blue Yellow and Green wires
and will refuse to start if something is "missing".
Is my assumption correct?
If yes, is there a way to "fool" it into thinking the battery is in place?

Has anyone successfully run their tablet from an external power source
WITHOUT the battery in place?

Thanks for your help.
